In a recent episode of Eye on Education on Dubai Eye 103.8, Michael Morley, Senior Assistant Headteacher (Pastoral), and Kyle Lewis, Head of Year 8 at Royal Grammar School Guildford Dubai, shared how the new shorter Friday school day is being approached inside schools and at home, with a focus on keeping the week feeling purposeful and positive.

Michael explained that the priority from a leadership perspective was to respond calmly and treat the shift as a structural adjustment rather than a disruption, reinforcing that Friday remains a full and important school day where attendance matters for learning and wider school life.

Kyle noted that while some small changes have been needed, the academic curriculum has largely stayed on track, with schools making thoughtful decisions about where time is best spent. He shared that some parts of school life, like assemblies, are being thoughtfully adjusted for now, as schools settle into the new rhythm and shape routines that still protect learning time.

The discussion also looked at how families can help children adapt smoothly. Michael suggested talking children through the “why” behind the change and reframing the earlier finish as time gained, which can be used for wellbeing, decompression after a busy week, or building wider life skills. Kyle added that for older pupils, using part of Friday afternoon to complete any remaining tasks can prevent work from lingering over the weekend, and encouraged parents to keep communication open so homework feels supportive rather than punitive.

Overall, the episode highlighted that with clear routines, a calm mindset and trust in school planning, the updated Friday schedule can become an opportunity for balance, helping pupils stay engaged during the week while making space for rest, family time and healthy habits.
