Ramadan is a special time across the UAE, not only in homes and mosques, but in classrooms too. In a recent Eye on Education episode on Dubai Eye 103.8, host Helen Farmer welcomed Sameera Hussain, Prep Teacher (Year 6) at Royal Grammar School Guildford Dubai (RGSGD) to discuss how schools thoughtfully embrace the spirit of the holy month while supporting pupils of all backgrounds.

Sameera highlighted how RGSGD takes a holistic and inclusive approach to Ramadan, with a focus on cultural understanding and shared values such as empathy, patience, reflection and community. These values are embedded throughout the year, but Ramadan provides a meaningful lens through which to deepen them.

For pupils who are fasting, many for the first time, the school has introduced practical and sensitive provisions. Dedicated fasting rooms, decorated with beanbags, board games and creative activities, offer children a comfortable space during break times. Lessons continue as normal, but with flexibility: pupils can opt out of singing in music, woodwind instruments, PE or swimming if needed. Teachers work closely with families and respond to each child individually, recognising that every pupil’s experience of fasting is different.

Beyond logistics, the conversation explored how Ramadan inspires character development. Year 6 pupils are keeping reflection journals, setting personal goals such as being more patient, organised or kind. The school also runs community initiatives including Ramadan fridges and Eid care boxes, which pupils help prepare and later distribute to support staff, reinforcing gratitude and generosity in tangible ways.

Sameera also shared recommended children’s books such as Ramadan Moon, Leila’s Lunchbox, and Eid with Iman, which help answer pupils’ questions and build cultural understanding in an accessible way, particularly for families new to the region.

Reflecting personally on the month, Sameera described Ramadan as a time when the wider Dubai community comes together. She reminded listeners that while fasting involves abstaining from food and drink, its deeper challenge, and reward, lies in striving to be patient, kind and mindful even in moments of hunger or fatigue.

This insightful discussion offers reassurance and practical guidance for parents and educators navigating Ramadan in school settings, while celebrating the shared values that unite diverse communities across the UAE.
