Academic achievement is an important part of education, but some of the most valuable lessons happen beyond the classroom. In a recent Eye on Education episode on Dubai Eye 103.8, host Helen Farmer welcomed Nicholas Radbourne, Deputy Head Teacher – Whole School at Royal Grammar School Guildford Dubai, to discuss how experiential learning helps students develop the skills needed for life beyond school.

Nicholas highlighted the importance of giving students opportunities to learn through real-world experiences, including educational trips, community service, work experience, entrepreneurial projects, and leadership roles. He explained how these experiences help students build confidence, resilience, independence, communication skills, and a greater understanding of their strengths and interests.

The conversation also explored how leadership can take many forms, with schools creating opportunities for students to contribute through wellbeing, environmental, reading, and community-focused initiatives. Nicholas emphasised that while academic success remains important, experiences beyond the classroom help prepare students for future careers and life challenges by encouraging them to step outside their comfort zones and discover new possibilities.
