Art holds a powerful place in a child’s development, offering a space to take risks, explore freely, and discover personal identity. In a recent Eye on Education episode on Dubai Eye 103.8, host Helen Farmer spoke with Toyin Godfrey, Head of Art at Royal Grammar School Guildford Dubai, about how creative environments help pupils build confidence, curiosity, and resilience.

Toyin shared her own journey from studying fashion and textiles in London to becoming an art educator, reflecting on how immersive creative experiences shaped her outlook. She discussed why art often becomes a pupil’s favourite subject, explaining that the classroom acts as a safe space where young people can experiment without judgement and learn to express their perspective in different forms.

The conversation also explored the impact of inspiration and exposure, from gallery visits to community exhibitions, highlighting how showcasing pupils’ work can transform how they see themselves. Looking ahead, Toyin spoke about the growing creative landscape in the UAE and how embracing both traditional techniques and emerging technologies, including AI, can broaden opportunities for young artists. Her message to families was clear: encourage exploration, celebrate individuality, and give children the space to create with confidence.
