Unexpected changes to the school calendar can bring challenges for families. In a recent Eye on Education episode on Dubai Eye 103.8, Charlotte Grieves, Head of Prep at Royal Grammar School Guildford Dubai, shared insights on how schools and families can support children following the rapid shift to home learning and the announcement of an earlier-than-planned school holiday.

Charlotte highlighted the adaptability of schools across the UAE, explaining that many now have clear distance learning plans that allow teachers and students to move smoothly between classroom and online learning. She noted that during this period, the priority has been maintaining connection, ensuring children continue to see their teachers, hear instructions directly, and stay in touch with classmates.

She also emphasised the importance of balance during home learning, encouraging activities away from screens such as reading, writing by hand, and completing practical tasks before sharing them online. Schools also recognise that families are juggling many responsibilities, and expectations around completing work may need to be more flexible.

Looking ahead to the early holiday, Charlotte encouraged parents to maintain simple routines at home, including shared meals, helping with small household tasks, and making time for family activities. Keeping children active, limiting excessive screen time, and openly discussing emotions can help children feel secure during this period of change.
